While many people are taking advantage of a sunny and warm spring day to beautify their own yards, a group of volunteers had a broader perspective and chose to clean up their town instead.
Members of the Allen Park Beautification Commission, along with numerous volunteers, attended the commission’s Good Neighbor Saturday event on April 23.
The project was implemented through a partnership with Allen Park Public Schools and Lowe’s of Allen Park.
The group started the day by meeting in the parking lot of Bennie Elementary School in Champaign, then split into teams, which they were assigned to clean up different areas of the city.
The volunteers were of all ages, from children to seniors.
“We had a huge turnout,” said Kyle Waligora, vice chair of the commission and organizer of the event. “Over 30 AP residents came out to help. We did the cleaning of Park Avenue, Allen Road and Ecorse Road. We really appreciated the help.”
Much of the work consisted of picking up trash, sweeping sidewalks, and pulling weeds.
For those who missed this purge, several more are planned throughout the year. Dates and times of future cleanups are: May 17, 6-8pm; June 21, 6-8 p.m.; August 20, 10am-12pm; 17 Sept, 10am-12pm; and October 8, 10 a.m.-12 p.m
Waligora said locations need to be established so those interested in volunteering are encouraged to visit the Allen Park Beautification Facebook page.
