The Texas Workforce Commission offers a special childcare grant to parents in the service sector. TWC has an existing low-income childcare grant, but the new program for parents who work in retail, lodging, hospitality, arts, entertainment and recreation doesn’t currently have a waiting list – according to a TWC spokesperson.
Countering the shortage of skilled workers with help from day-care centers
It is an attempt to fill the labor shortage in the service industry.
“Often it is the choice between working or not working,” says James Bernsen from TWC. “A lot of people do the math and they would lose so much money on childcare.”
The TWC plans to spend up to $ 500 million in federal COVID-19 aid to help cover childcare costs for up to a year if parents adhere to guidelines.
To qualify, TWC said families shouldn’t be more than 75 years old. can earnNS Percentile of government median income. For a family of four, that’s $ 64,043 a year.

Up to three months of help for unemployed parents
In June, the Commission also extended the childcare allowance to unemployed parents and offers up to three months of support in paying for the day care center while the parents are looking for a job.
“We know parents struggle to get back to work and work,” said Tori Mannes, president and CEO of the nonprofit ChildCareGroup. “We are grateful to the Texas Workforce Commission for providing parents with free childcare for their children so they can find work and get back to work.”
ChildCareGroup said it manages the Texas Workforce Commission’s childcare services contract in three regions, including Workforce Solutions for the greater Dallas area, and cares for approximately 18,000 Texas children daily.
Up until now, parents who were already working or who were taking part in training or further education could be included in the childcare allowance. TWC said the lack of childcare is often cited as an obstacle for parents to find work.
The childcare allowance is available to parents looking for work until September 30th, 2022.
Individual personnel development committees process these applications locally. According to the TWC, most put the income limit at 85% of the median income level in the state. For a family of four, that’s a maximum income of $ 72,582 per year.
