celebrate their 40th anniversary, 10,000 lunatics has much in common with western New York, as Jamestown is the city that gave birth to it in 1981. Both are honest and hardworking, a step outside of the mainstream and both possess a bit of magic. “It’s a city of working-class poetry,” says the keyboardist Dennis Drew. “And that’s what we’re about, real-life stories. We are a family, we do real work and we keep moving.”

The band has come a long way in their 40 years, from cult stardom to international fame to their current status as the cornerstone of the alternative band. But the sound and spirit of 10,000 Maniacs remains. The live shows span their entire catalog, and the lineup is still anchored by four of the six original members. Drew, guitarist John Lombardo and bassist Steven Gustafson 1981 co-founded the band. drummer Jerome Augustyniak joined in 1982 and solidified the rhythm section. And the two “newcomers” have long been part of the family: Maria Ramsey toured and recorded with the Maniacs as violist and backup vocalist from 1991 before stepping into the frontwoman role 27 years ago. And the new one jeff ericksonthe lead guitarist for just 19 years, came at the behest of his friend and mentor, the late Rob Buck.

The band is currently touring and writing new material for a 2023 release.
