The aim of the event is to support parents in coping with the stress of starting school

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) — If you’re a parent and you’re stressed about your kids getting back to school — two educators want to help.

They’re hosting a free event in Waimalu next Sunday to teach parents how to prepare their kids for success while supporting each other with mental health.

“Education is just not knowledge, you know, right now it’s about learning how to overcome emotions, you know, embracing mistakes and failures. And not just seeing them as opportunities for growth, not just a reason to get a consequence,” said event organizer Karen Gibson, who is a parent coach at Letting Go with Aloha. “We want to make sure we motivate our kids, but a lot of my students say they feel stressed about cell phones being taken away or privileges being taken away and that doesn’t really motivate them. It scares them and just makes them feel more stressed.”

She says the group will discuss healthy ways to motivate kids.

Children “just want to be heard, understood, not judged, and if we become open-minded, I really think you’re going to see a big change in kids because not only will they develop tools to overcome their stress, but I will.” think we’ll have more confident kids, they’ll be able to prepare for adulthood,” Gibson said.

The gathering will be held on August 28 at 2:30 p.m. at Waiau District Park.
