ELLENVILLE, NY – After a hiatus enforced by COVID-19 security concerns that closed Shadowland Stages for more than a year, the theater opened its 2021 season with The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) (Revised).
The play by Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield is directed by Brendan Burke and consists of three actors. It consists of 37 pieces and lasts 97 minutes.
“You said it wasn’t possible. Or … maybe they said it shouldn’t be done. Either way, we’ll do it! Three crazy “scholars” in pantyhose perform the entire Shakespeare canon in this hilarious irreverent frenzy, “states the theater’s website, https://shadowlandstages.org/2021-season/the-complete-works/.
The professional cast of Actors Equity includes James Taylor Odom, Julia Register and Brandon Rubin.
Recently, Burke, who is 17 years old, spoke.
Burke contracted COVID himself in March 2020 and spent a month in hospital with the virus, he said. Fortunately, he was the only member of the company who was affected.
Shadowland’s administration and board of directors used the unplanned downtime to reassess its “mission and values,” Burke said. During this time they developed the new adjoining scene shop and the theater administration, renovated a new rehearsal and performance room and started an educational program in a former hardware store in a donated 5,600 square meter neighboring building.
Burke said investing in the theater’s educational program was one of the goals set during the pandemic recess. Acting classes are offered for children aged 5 to 18 and also for adults.
Burke compared adapting or “pivoting” to living after COVIDland in Shadowland with “plans on changing grounds” or trying to fix an airplane in mid-flight.
But that didn’t stop the theater and its staff from moving forward. Until just a few weeks before the opening of the first show of 2021 on August 13, Burke said plans for outdoor productions were in place. As the conditions changed, it was decided to open the season in the hall.
For the 2021 summer season, all viewers must provide proof of vaccination or a negative test result within 72 hours of the show, Burke said. In addition, all members of the cast, staff and crew are vaccinated according to strict union requirements and wear masks when not on stage, he added.
