The Muskogee Police Department is working with the city’s religious leaders to involve the community in several activities over the next few days.
Activities are planned for Faith and Blue Weekend as part of a national initiative aimed at building a more engaged community.
“It’s a kind of national night out that brings officials and the community together,” said Deputy Police Chief Reggie Cotton, an event organizer.
“The overall goal is essentially to engage the community and show that we support them,” Cotton said. “Many times, especially in this day and age, you can see on the news that it shows some of the bad things. It’s just an opportunity to show the public that we are just like them.”
He said this is the first year such events are held. Faith and Blue events are scheduled for Tulsa and Oklahoma City, he said.
The festivities in Muskogee begin with a minute’s silence and a “parade” on Friday at 9:05 am at the Muskogee Early Childhood Center and Youth Central, according to a media release.
Saturday celebrations include mobile vaccinations and a child safety program at 11:00 am in the Arrowhead Mall parking lot.
“They will help parents with car seats and help parents install car seats,” Cotton said.
Various ball games will take place in Spaulding Park on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Cotton said he works with members of the Muskogee Ministerial Alliance and the Muskogee Ministers’ Union.
Muskogee Police Chief Johnny Teehee praised the effort.
“This is an opportunity to further improve our department’s relationship with our community,” Teehee said in a media release. “There is no better place to do it than the Muskogee religious organizations. Many cities across the country are now emphasizing what we have done an excellent job of for years. Hope to see you at an event this weekend. “
