Kelowna ‘Polar Bear Dip’ personal portion canceled due to COVID-19

Kelowna residents looking to band together for the Community Recreational Initiatives Society’s annual Polar Bear Dip have just received some disappointing news.

The CRIS has just announced that the in-person portion of the event will be canceled due to COVID-19. Now the event is moved to a virtual environment.

<p>“We want to make the safety of our community a priority and with the rising COVID-19 rates over the Christmas period, we believe this is the right decision at this time,” wrote <a class=event organizer Russell Cogan.

For those who don’t know, the winter tradition is about more than just the January 1st jump. It is also an opportunity for CRIS to raise funds for their invaluable service.

CRIS is a local non-profit organization that uses adaptive equipment to assist people with barrier-free access to exercise and participate in outdoor sports and recreational activities.

If you still want to participate virtually, you can do so online at the CRIS ‘trellis side. By this point, the event has already raised $ 32,953 of its $ 50,000 goal.

“Prove you’re a polar bear. Take a dip in the lake, take an ice cold bath, jump into a snowdrift. Be free to get creative.”

Everyone who takes the plunge is asked to record a video and post it on social media. Awards are given to some of the best videos.
