From wasteland to the largest concert venue on the Costa del Sol

Sonora was created specifically for this festival and can accommodate up to 50,000 people. / Sur

La Cala de Mijas has been transformed with the creation of Sonora, a 150,000m2 festival site complete with four stages, relaxation areas and more

If you search Google for directions, it will show you a piece of wasteland that ends at a golf course and some apartment buildings. That is why it is so surprising to arrive there and discover the gigantic structures that are being built on a 150,000 square meter plot that leads to a hill with paths, viewpoints and shaded rest areas. It makes you want to have a picnic or go for a walk.

This is Sonora, an ambitious project that has transformed the area into the largest live music venue in the province of Malaga.

A few months ago there was nothing here, but now there are four stages – two are used simultaneously during the Cala Mijas Festival – and the area can hold up to 50,000 people a day. Between 100,000 and 120,000 music lovers are expected during the three-day event.

Three car parks with space for 5,000 cars have been set up at Las Lagunas, El Lagar and at the racetrack; There is an official campsite with 15,000 seats and of course more than 70 artists and bands will play music for all tastes. This is a very important event.

The Cala Mijas Festival may be taking place for the first time, but the organizers are really hoping that it will become a permanent part of the calendar and for this reason Sonora was designed as a kind of mini-city with garden areas that will continue to grow and connected to the Mijas Playa Wastewater Treatment Plant so that recycled wastewater can be used for irrigation.

Free concerts on the beach

However, Sonora isn’t the only place where fans can enjoy three days of live music next week. There is said to be a fifth stage called La Playa next to the sea in La Cala and these concerts are free to attend. They take place on the same days but start earlier, at 12.00. Concerts at La Sonora begin at 5 p.m. Artists at La Playa include La Dani, Kumbia Queers, Rakky Ripper, Laguna Goons and Dengue Dengue Dengue, as well as DJs such as Dinamarca, GAZZI and 8kitoo.
