Falkirk Council: Tryst Orchestra fears for the future of Falkirk Town Hall as a concert venue

The orchestra is one of several arts groups rocked by news that FTH could close at the end of the year, to be demolished alongside adjacent municipal buildings.

President John Paterson said: “The concert will be held at Falkirk Town Hall, which has been our home for 20 years.

“Unfortunately, if the decision to close City Hall is confirmed at Wednesday’s Council meeting, the Orchestra will be left homeless along with many other organizations in the city.

The Falkirk Tryst Orchestra will soon be staging its 20th anniversary concert

“It seems likely that this will be the last performance in the place we all love so much.”

Anger at proposals to close Falkirk Town Hall

Falkirk City Councils will decide tomorrow (Wednesday) whether to close the building permanently after hearing a report that it would cost millions and take a year to separate from city buildings.

Even so, City Hall would still not be “fit for purpose” and preserving it would prevent the land from being sold to fund a replacement.

Falkirk Council has pledged that a new town hall will be built, but after years of wrangling there is still no agreement on what that will look like and local groups are furious that there has been no consultation on plans to build it so soon close.

Undaunted, the orchestra is planning a “very entertaining” program for the evening of Friday, October 7, featuring well-known themes from stage musicals and films, as well as other well-loved classical pieces.

It will also include a piece by local composer Archibald Smith and a world premiere of a piece written especially for the orchestra and for Falkirk called ‘The Taming of the Kelpie’ by David Hughes and Michael Graham.

Mr Paterson added: “It will be a wonderful evening and a very emotional one for all members of the orchestra and many spectators.”

Tickets, priced at £14 (accompanied children are free), are available from the box office at Falkirk Stadium on 01324 506850.
