After testifying for several days that Depp’s drug and alcohol use would turn him into a “monster” who would be violent toward her, an attorney for Depp specifically questioned Heard about her own drug use, including planning “drug” Times at couple 2015 wedding.
“Who was the real monster in this relationship, Ms. Heard?” Depp’s attorney Camille Vasquez asked Tuesday.
“It’s half of Johnny. It’s not all Johnny. The other half of him is wonderful and beautiful and the man I have loved,” Heard testified.
Depp has accused Heard of slandering him in a 2018 op-ed for The Washington Post. In the piece, which was published about two years after their divorce, Heard described himself as a “public figure who represents domestic violence.” Though Depp wasn’t named in the article, he claims it cost him lucrative acting roles.
Heard has filed a counterclaim for $100 million.
On the witness stand, Heard has described her relationship with Depp as both violent and romantic, and has said his alleged violence against her correlates with his drug and alcohol use.
“It was always the man who did drugs and beat me up. Yeah, that’s always been the monster,” Heard testified.
Depp has previously testified that he has never “hit a woman” in his life.
Noting Heard’s own drug use, Vasquez presented a typed schedule of Depp and Heard’s wedding plans on the actor’s private island in the Bahamas, which included time for “dance party and drugs and music” after a rehearsal dinner.
“So you planned on having drugs at your wedding to someone you characterize as a drug addict?” Vasquez said.
“To be fair, we wanted to have separate parties,” Heard said. “This is clearly a draft that was sent before many changes were made.”
Messages between Heard and Depp
Vasquez also played footage of Heard and Depp arguing, read excerpts from a “love diary” by Heard filled with messages to Depp, and read texts between the former couple.
In an April 2016 journal entry, Heard wrote, “I’m sorry to be going insane. I’m sorry I hurt you. None of this is meant to be an excuse to hurt you because the truth is nothing. There’s never enough reason to hurt you.”
Heard wrote in a March 2015 text to a doctor, “I don’t know if I can ever change.”
Heard testified she was referring to the former couple’s relationship.
“I really wanted to get out of the relationship I was in. But I didn’t feel like I had the power to leave her,” Heard testified. “I knew I was in a very toxic relationship with Johnny. And I knew I had to change that.”
In footage, Heard told Depp he was a “sellout” and a “joke.” Depp called her “the most spoiled fucking brat”.
“I called them awfully ugly things, as you can hear. We spoke to each other in a terrible way,” Heard admitted.
When Vasquez Heard asked how she landed her role in Aquaman, one of her best-known roles to date, the actress replied succinctly.
“Mr. Depp got you that part in Aquaman, didn’t he?” asked Vasquez.
“No, Ms. Vasquez. I auditioned for this role. That’s how it works,” Heard replied.
