Participants can take part in games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Magic the Gathering!
Hundreds of players will descend on the Vancouver Convention Center this April to revive a wide-ranging tournament with a five-figure prize pool.
Vancouver Battle Royale (VBR) is a gaming tournament series created by Vancouver Street Battle (VSB) in late 2015 and held annually until 2018 when VSB joined The Gaming Stadium, an eSports stadium in Richmond. From then on, the tournament entered a four-year hiatus, the restart of which was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, but wasn’t the only reason organizers explained in an email to Vancouver Is Awesome. This year the event is back, appropriately titled Vancouver Battle Royale: Resurrection.
After ten days of registration, 213 people registered to take part. Event organizers expect that number to rise to 800 by the April 20 registration deadline. The last major tournament The Gaming Stadium held at the Vancouver Convention Centre, Pinnacle 2021, had around 1,500 participants, including spectators.
The event itself runs from Saturday April 23rd to Sunday April 24th and will feature over 20 different titles, the most games ever seen in a BC tournament. These titles include Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Street Fighter V, Tekken 7, Pokemon TCG, and Magic the Gathering.
The $15,000 split between each event is an average-sized prize pool for an event of this size, but it’s half what Pinnacles last year.
“VBR is community oriented with a primary focus on the Pacific Northwest while Pinnacle is our main destination with players traveling from all over the world,” explained event organizer Ryan Picardo.
For those wondering if you’re good enough to get in, there are no entry requirements.
“Players of all skill levels are encouraged to sign up! We’ll have tournament brackets for 21 different games, including traditional, platform, and anime fighting games, as well as trading card games,” continued Picardo. “Players can participate in up to four different games, and with the wide variety of game titles, we hope there’s something for everyone.”
